Roman Art

Stuff

Much is made (in these post-reductionist times) of the "Roman pest" as well was "PAX Romanica" (ie, join us or die. However, in Roman civilisation (as compared to Greek - always the case) they treated women much more equally (there is evidence in the earlie Etruscian society as well). Further, they were the *great* accumulators of ideas and things - as with all conquorers. In doing so, it is arguable that they did much to tie together random bits of technology and ideas thus paving the way for the Arab culture to carry this information thru the so-called "dark ages" -[Medieval era]- Perhaps there highest calling was the appreciation of culture as such - often acreting ideas into their own works and arts. Naturally in sculpture, the Roman copies are easy to spot due to their "supporting structure". This would make for an inretestng story as to why they (clearly the western reductionists that they were) some how couldn't "get" how the human form stood and at least mimic/reproduce the Greek brilliance in the stand-alone statues. Odd things, history; what?
