Despite the "minimalist" nature of much of N's work, his work is more
definitely "classified" in the area of Abstract Expressionism.

His work is all the more powerful when seen against his background
as a teacher and bon viviant of art; in the much the same way that
Mary Cassat felt that everyone
should be able to afford original art -- an hence her devotion to 
in-expensive, yet luxuriant lithography prints.
